Hevel

by Claire Webb

Inspired by historical Vanitas paintings, this piece contemplates the fake and fleeting nature of contemporary wealth and abundance through a traditional form of power jewelry - a gold medallion. Hand fabricated from repurposed heat-sealed plastic (referencing modern food packaging aimed at prolonging the life of precious, perishable items) enclosing discs of faux gold leaf (a cheap illusion of wealth) and a Vanitas-like array of once-fresh fruit, flowers, gemstones, and pearls, this necklace exists in an endless, visceral state of decay that is a reminder of the fragility of all human circumstances.

plastic, gold leaf, fruit, flowers, nuts, pearls, gemstones

16" x 4.5" x .25"
