Age of Compromise

by Maria Camera-Smith

These objects of adornment have become systems through which I can process growth, grief, and loss. The historical and cultural threads that persist through jewelry allow me to place things into a context that can be both expressive and introspective. Much of my work pulls from nature and humankind’s relationship with it. I collect and cast plant life from physical, geographic locations that hold personal significance. This practice allows me to immortalize the moment I experienced while working through the emotional weight of that point in time. Whether it is accepting my aging body, processing the memory of a near-death experience, or using dried plants as jewels, I can carry these experiences forward. Raised in rural western Pennsylvania, my upbringing revolved around survivalist/naturalist concepts. The memories and lessons have now become anecdotal, romantic notions of how I analyze the world around me.
