Tumbleweave II

by J Taran Diamond

Hair occupies an ambiguous space between body and ornament. In my practice, I use this space as a lens through which to view blackness and gender, both in myself and in the broader culture I navigate. In the "Tumbleweave" series, I specifically investigate clumps of synthetic hair lost from black women’s braids and weaves, colloquially known as tumbleweaves. I attempt to grant these pieces of hair an afterlife of sorts by returning them to adorn the body once more in the form of jewelry objects. These objects, once completed, function to memorialize the body from which the hair was lost in a manner not dissimilar to traditional hair jewelry or reliquaries.

brass, powder coat, velvet, lost synthetic hair, thread, titanium
